This is about as prime a slice of classic quartet Trane as you can find - two discs worth, to boot. Sound is superb throughout and the song selection is tried and true Trane warhorses of the era. So what sets it apart from the six thousand other live Coltrane releases from the 1960's? The main thing that jumps out at me - or rather, that doesn't jump out - is how much a group effort this music is. No matter how much people talk about how great The Quartet is, talk always goes back to this Trane solo or that Trane solo, and maybe at points to how Tyner and Garrison drop out to allow for an extended dialogue between Coltrane and Jones. But here the key to the music is that it's a group effort all the way. There's no point of this - and I'm talking even about the parts where one or more players drop out - where it feels like anyone is giving less than his all, doing less than swinging his ass off, or standing in anybody's shadow. It's inspired music for the entirety of two discs. Pointless in my mind to even point to individual efforts or moments - everyone shines and plays brilliantly, excitingly, forcefully, ecstatically. There are other performances of this group (or slightly altered versions of same) that carry some extra gravity for me in terms of importance, but when it comes down to representing a phase of the band - and 1963 is a key phase of consolidation of gains and leading up to the next breakthrough - and laying down a quantity of sheerly enjoyable and listenable music, this can't be beat.
